Brunei Darussalam is a sovereign state in Southeastern Asia. Located on the Borneo island, the country is completely surrounded by Malaysia. Brunei is the only sovereign state on Borneo, with the remainder of the island’s territory being divided between Malaysia and Indonesia. It has a population of just under half a million, which is mostly concentrated around the country’s capital or other urban centers. The elderly population increases each year by 0.1 to 0.2 percent, and is expected to increase to more than 7 percent by 2021, qualifying Brunei as an aging nation. This is also reflected in the age distribution of the country, with the median age being expected to surpass 40 years by 2040, and in the rather low fertility rate.
