Niger is a land-locked West African republic and one of the largest countries in the world in terms of land area. Additionally, Niger's population figures are quite high, amounting to an estimated population of almost 19 million inhabitants in 2016 and estimated to increase by more than 1.5 million until 2020. The largest city in the country is the capital, Niamey. Since not even 20 percent of the population live in cities, Niger is among the countries with the lowest degree of urbanization.
