Mali is a large landlocked country located in West Africa. It is bordered by Algeria, Niger, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Senegal and Mauritania. The country came out of a military dictatorship in the early 1990s and remained a relatively stable and democratic republic until 2012, when the president was ousted and the military seized power. Around the same time, the presence of al-Qaeda increased in the northern part of the country, causing further instability in the region. In 2013, the presidency was returned to civilian control, but the situation remains tense today, and separatists and Islamists are sporadically active throughout the country and pose increasing risks to Mali's present and future stability.
