Frozen food market in Europe - statistics and facts

Changing lifestyles and demands impact consumer behavior, and the speed of modern life turns European customers towards frozen food - food that is easy and quick to prepare. The revenue of the total ready-to-eat food market in Europe, which includes classic frozen foods such as meat, fish, vegetables, and pizza, is expected to reach new highs in the coming years.

Leading markets and categories

In 2023, over four million tons of frozen food items were sold in Europe’s leading food market, Germany. The revenue of frozen goods sold in German retail over the past decade has continually increased and most recently totaled over 11.6 billion euros annually. In comparison, the total value of frozen food retail sales in the UK amounted to approximately 8.6 billion British pounds that year. The UK market witnessed particularly impressive growth, with sales growing by over 15 percent compared to the previous year. Frozen chips and other potato products were the most popular frozen products in the UK, followed closely by other frozen vegetables. Similarly, in France, savory frozen food options made up the lion’s share of sales.

Generation Z is the least likely to choose frozen food products

Gen Z, the youngest surveyed generational cohort of consumers, was the least likely to state that they eat frozen food regularly in the UK and Germany, two of Europe’s biggest economies. In the UK, millennials and baby boomers were the biggest fans of frozen convenience products. The average household in Germany consumed almost 100 kilograms of frozen food in 2023. This is an increase of over 17 percent compared to a decade earlier. As Generation Z continues to have a bigger impact on consumption patterns, this trend may reverse across Germany and its European neighbors and frozen food manufacturers may need to better target younger consumers.
