The Georgia Power Company is an electric utility in the United States that serves mostly all of Georgia’s counties and provides electricity to approximately 2.5 million customers. Georgia Power, along with various other companies like Gulf Power, is owned by Southern Company. The company began operations in the early 20th century as the industrial sector grew and thus, the demand for electricity started to increase. It was initially established as the Georgia Railway and Power Company to consolidate streetcar lines and their generating plants. Today, the Georgia Power Company owns and operates about 46 electricity generating plants, including hydroelectric dams, fossil-fuel generation plants, and nuclear power plants.
