Syria is a medium-sized country in Western Asia, bordering Turkey to the north, Iraq to the east, Jordan and Israel to the south, and Lebanon and the Mediterranean Sea to the west. Syria’s two largest cities, Damascus (the capital) and Aleppo, are possibly the two longest continuously inhabited cities in the world, and many locations of global cultural, religious, and historical significance are in present-day Syria. However, Syria’s recent history has been one of turmoil and devastation.
