The 12-day war between Israel and Iran marked the most intense confrontation ever between the two regional rivals. After decades of mutual threats and mounting international pressure over Iran鈥檚 advancing nuclear program, hostilities erupted after Israel launched strikes on June 13, 2025. Israel鈥檚 declared goal was to neutralize Iran鈥檚 nuclear capabilities, although Iran denied any intentions to develop nuclear weapons. In the opening hours of the war, Israel targeted Iran鈥檚 military leadership and air defenses, as well as nuclear facilities and scientists with expertise in nuclear weapons development to erode the Islamic Republic鈥檚 technical knowledge base. Iran retaliated by launching a series of ballistic missile barrages and deploying hundreds of armed drones toward Israeli territory. The mutual hostilities resulted in 28 civilian and one military fatality in Israel. 1,190 Iranian fatalities were reported, of whom at least 436 were civilians.
