Banking in Czechia - statistics & facts
After 1989, the banking system in Czechia underwent significant changes. The state-owned banks were privatized, and foreign banks entered the market, bringing new ideas and increased competition. The Czech National Bank assumed a more prominent role as an independent regulator to ensure the system remained stable. Joining the European Union (EU) in 2004 enabled the banking industry to adopt European standards and become more globally connected. Today, the banking sector is well-developed, with both Czech and foreign banks serving individuals and companies. As of early 2025, the total assets of the banking sector have grown by more than eight trillion Czech koruna since 2004.
