U.S. power outages - statistics & facts
Over 80  percent of power supply interruptions in the United States over the past 20 years have been caused by high winds, rain, winter storms, and tropical cyclones. However, in 2023, trees were the country’s most common cause of power outages, resulting in more than 8,000 incidents, followed closely by equipment failure. Among the share of housing units experiencing complete power outages, rural areas were particularly hard-hit, with over 35 percent experiencing at least one complete loss of electricity that same year.
