IIn May 2003, Singapore signed a free trade agreement with the United States, the United States-Singapore Free Trade Agreement (USSFTA) , which came into effect on January 1, 2004. The USSFTA promoted bilateral trade and economic ties between Singapore and the U.S. , by lowering or eliminating tariffs on goods and services, as well as facilitating and simplifying the movement of people from both countries for business purposes. Since then, the U.S. has become one of Singapore's leading trading partners and sources of foreign direct investment.
