Since President Trump announced reciprocal tariffs in April 2025, Indonesia’s trade relationship with the United States has entered a new dynamic. Indonesia was subjected to a 32 percent tariff, the sixth-highest rate in Southeast Asia. For many years, Indonesia has seen a consistent trade surplus with the U.S. Although exports to the U.S. account for roughly ten percent of Indonesia’s total exports, lower than some neighboring countries, the U.S. remains its second-largest export destination, just behind China. With that, any shift in U.S. trade policies could impact the country’s economy. As time is ticking during the 90-day postponement, a key question arises: What steps will Indonesia take during this critical period?
