Body weight in Japan - statistics & facts
Japan has one of the lowest overweight rates among OECD countries. Around 21 percent of Japanese women were considered overweight, while men had a slightly higher share. In comparison, between 45 and 67 percent of adults were considered obese across European countries. Furthermore, Japan has one of the highest average life expectancies worldwide. Recent studies suggested a relationship between a healthy body weight and longevity since low obesity rates decrease health risks such as diabetes or high blood pressure. Other factors that can support longevity are regular exercise, a healthy diet, and access to healthcare.
