Catholicism as long dominated the religious landscape of Latin America and the Caribbean. During the XV and XVI centuries, Christianity was introduced in the region during the colonization by the Catholic Portuguese and Spanish empires, with the support of Pope Alexandre VI. During this time, missionaries were deployed to the region to convert the resident population to the catholic faith. Thus, Catholicism became the most common faith in the region, holding this position until today.
