Ahead of the first Women鈥檚 Ashes series in 1934, England captain Betty Archdale reportedly said, 鈥淲e are not here for any Ashes but merely to play cricket.鈥 This spirit stood in sharp contrast to the Men鈥檚 series at the time, with the 1932-33 鈥楤odyline鈥 series having ignited the rivalry between the two nations to the point of the Australian Prime Minister getting involved. However, Archdale鈥檚 words were borne from the fact that no member of the English Women鈥檚 Cricket Association at the time could take part in a cup competition. In fact, it would not be until 1998 that the Women鈥檚 series awarded a trophy to the victors. Since then, the Women鈥檚 Ashes have not only been fiercely contested, but also showcased some of the best cricketing talent in the women鈥檚 professional game. One shining example is Australian superstar, Ellyse Perry, who held the all-time series record for leading run-scorer and leading wicket-taker as of 2025.
