Mining in the Philippines - statistics & facts
After Indonesia banned nickel exports in 2020, the Philippines became the largest nickel exporter in 2023, and the second-largest nickel producer. As one of the countries rich in metallic resources, the Philippines stands a chance to become among the largest mining economies in the world. However, limited infrastructure, policy issues, and increasing environmental concerns continue to limit its potential. Furthermore, a nine-year ban on new mining projects and open-pit mining had caused sluggish growth. Although it was recently lifted in 2021, the industry is still recovering from its impact.
