The metal industry is among Japan's most pivotal industries, providing materials and services to many cornerstones of Japan's economy, from electronics to construction and transportation. Hence, the contributions of the metal industry are extremely broad. On a fundamental level, the industry can be differentiated into two interconnected segments. The basic metal production segment covers the production of basic or intermediary products from raw materials, such as iron or copper ore, using techniques like smelting, refining, and rolling. Fabricated metal production is the second segment, in which the intermediary products are further processed. Common techniques used in the fabrication process include cutting, bending, welding, and stamping to turn the ingredients into semifinished or finished products, including the assembly of metal parts into the finalized structure or machinery.
