Transgender rights in the United States - statistics & facts
Although only around one percent of the United States population is transgender - meaning their gender identity differs from what was assigned at birth 鈥 transgender rights remain at the top of the American policy agenda. In recent years, a record number of state-level bills have been introduced by Republican lawmakers looking to limit trans access to gender-affirming care, sports participation, supportive school policies, and public bathrooms and facilities. Shortly after taking office, President Donald Trump ramped up this reversal of trans rights by issuing a sweeping executive order stating that the United States will recognize only two sexes, male and female, that are fixed at birth.
