Combining these with ease of access to medical facilities and medical specialists with high-quality services at competitive prices, Thailand has become a popular destination for medical tourism. Some private hospitals even offer translation services to tackle the language barrier. Promoting Thailand as a medical hub
Thailand is one of the most highly ranked health systems in Asia-Pacific. In 2023 the country’s medical tourism expense revenue was anticipated to surpass pre-pandemic figures. The Thai government thus sees medical tourism as a key sector to reviving the economy. To promote the country as a medical hub, Thailand introduced a medical treatment visa in 2023 specifically for medical tourists. This visa allows foreigners who visit the country for medical purposes to stay for 90 days, instead of 60 days, for single-entry tourist visas and nationals of countries that are entitled to visa exemption. Other strategies introduced by the government to improve its medical tourism sector include advancing pharmaceutical manufacturing, promoting health and wellness services, and enhancing traditional and alternative medicine services. The Thai government also announced its efforts to construct a one-stop medical center in Phuket, one of its most popular and profitable tourist destinations, and launch it as a world-class medical tourism hub.Private hospitals fuel Thailand’s medical tourism boom
Healthcare in Thailand comprises of both public and private providers. However, private hospitals usually dominate the list of medical facilities in Thailand that receive accreditation for world-class service quality standards. For example, Bumrungrad International Hospital, Medpark Hospital, and Samitivej Hospital were accredited by The Joint Commission (JCI), a global leader in health care certification. The JCI accreditation attests to the safety and quality of care patients may receive at the awarded medical facilities. When it comes to costs, Thailand has an advantage over developed countries and other popular destinations for medical tourism.
