Over 660 million people (or around 8.18 percent of the global population) call Latin America their home. Likewise, Brazil and Mexico ranked among the top ten most populous countries in the world, with over 212 million and 131 million inhabitants, respectively, only surpassed by the United States on the American continent. Alongside their high population density, São Paulo and Mexico City are among the ten most populous cities in the world. Like many other megacities, the metropolitan areas of Latin America suffer from problems such as unorganized development, pollution, crime, poverty and transportation issues.
