Disability refers to any condition that makes it more difficult for the person to complete or participate in certain activities. Disabilities are often categorized under four main types including intellectual, physical, sensory, and mental. A disability can impact a person’s ability to do things to varying degrees. For example, in Australia, people needing help with one or more core activity areas due to a disability are classified as having a severe or profound disability. In Australia, the share of the population with a severe or profound disability has slightly declined over time, as has the share of people with any disability. Nonetheless, disability affects many aspects of life for those with a disability, their families, and the wider community. People with disabilities continue to face several challenges in their everyday lives, including access to healthcare, difficulties finding employment, and experiences of discrimination and stigma.
