The history of the Mexican steel sector dates back to the early 1900s, when the first steel mill was established in Monterrey, the capital city of the northeastern state of Nuevo León. Since then, steel has been a crucial component of the country's industrial sector. As of 2023, the iron and steel sector contributed approximately 58.9 billion Mexican pesos to Mexico’s real gross domestic product (GDP). In 2023, the country received foreign direct investment of approximately 768 million dollars for the iron and steel industry.
