Supplementary notes
*Estimate
The National Institutes for Food and Drug Control did not publish the detailed volume of vaccines released in China since April 2021, the 2021 data was estimated by the publisher based on the market situation.
In 2021, apart from the COVID-19 vaccine doses, approximately *** million doses of vaccines were released in China, representing a decrease of almost percent from the previous year. The national immunization program in China covers about ** infectious diseases.
Population and changing demographics
China is the most populated country in the world, which consequently renders it as a highly potential market for the global vaccine manufacturing industry. The country has relaxed its decades-long one-child policy recently, which has contributed to a higher proportion of older people in the population. The new regulation encourages couples to have *** children, and this change is expected to drive the demand for child vaccinations. In China, free vaccines for children up to the age of 14 years are ensured by a government initiative named the Extended Program on Immunization (EPI).
The Chinese public and private vaccine markets
Vaccines in China are divided into *** groups: category I and category II. Category I vaccines are included in the EPI and government insurance schemes. They are compulsory vaccines and free of charge. Category II vaccines belong to the private sector. They are voluntary vaccines and made-for-profit. With a competitive private sector and government regulated market prices for public vaccines, the public vaccination market showed a steady decline in its revenue, accompanied by predictions of stagnation in terms of market size.
