KBC Asset Management lead the ranking of Belgian asset managers in 2021, based on assets under management (AUM). The pan-European company, which specializes in fixed income and equities, had around *** billion U.S. dollars worth of assets. The ranking consists of only entries as Belgium had far less asset management companies than, for example, the Netherlands.

Total AUM increasing

The market for professionally managed assets in Belgium is not as large in the United Kingdom, France or Germany. Belgian asset managers were responsible for *** billion euros worth of assets in 2017, the highest value since 2010. Despite a drop in 2018, the value kept increasing until 2020, when it reached *** billion euros.

Private banking centers around the “big banks”

Of all asset managers in Belgium, private banks made up the largest share. Most AUM can be found in the private banking divisions of the four largest banks in Belgium. This is probably due to the relatively low bar set for clients: investable assets of ** euros or more is enough to participate.
