¹ A new data processing approach was implemented from 2016 onward. Caution should therefore be taken when comparing data from 2011 to 2015, with data from 2016 onwards. Interviews were carried out every week of the year with a weekly sample size of around 2,000. Around 100,000 respondents were contacted annually in total and any who had returned from an overnight trip in the past four weeks were asked to describe details of that trip.
² A new weighting system was introduced this year, meaning figures recorded pre- and post-2021 are not directly comparable. Further information can be found .
³ The survey, carried out weekly, asks respondents about overnight trips taken in Great Britain during the previous four weeks. While the annual target sample is 60,000, the number of respondents from April to December 2021 was 47,008. However, the sample size used for trip estimation was lower than the number of interviews, as not every respondent had made an eligible overnight trip.
All spending figures are in historic prices, and have been rounded. Figures from before 2022 were taken from earlier publications.
For the years 2022 and 2023, data for Scotland and Wales was sourced from and , respectively.
