All data were self-reported. Participants who responded 鈥測es鈥 to 鈥淗as a doctor or other health professional ever told you that you had a stroke?鈥 were defined as having had a stroke.
In separate questions, respondents were asked if they had ever been told by a doctor or other health professional that they had: hypertension (or high blood pressure), coronary heart disease, angina (or angina pectoris), heart attack (or myocardial infarction), any other heart condition or disease not already mentioned, or a stroke.

Between 2020 and 2022, around 2.9 percent of adults in the U.S. reported having a stroke during such period. There were no significant differences between the share of males and females who reported having a stroke, with both shares reaching 2.9 percent.
