As of September 2024, the Malaysian supermarket chain Lotus's and MYDIN each had ** outlets nationwide. Lotus's supermarket in the country was rebranded from TESCO Malaysia, after the company sold its Malaysian operation to Thailand's Charoen Pokphand Group in December 2020.
The 2000s saw a boom in supermarkets and hypermarkets in Malaysia, with many store operators aggressively expanding and opening numerous outlets in the country. These retail outlets offered shoppers a large variety of products under one spacious roof, and many Malaysian families could be seen spending long hours shopping there. As of the second quarter of 2024, supermarkets and hypermarkets had the largest share of FMCG sales channels in Malaysia.
According to a 2023 survey, the majority of Malaysian consumers still preferred offline channels to purchase non-durable FMCG products like fresh vegetables. Nevertheless, in recent years, more supermarket chains are offering online options and delivery through websites or mobile apps. The grocery delivery market in Malaysia was estimated to be worth around *** million U.S. dollars in 2025.
