In fiscal year 2019, the central government of India spent around **** billion Indian rupees on the Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY) to provide health insurance coverage to below poverty line families in the country. The budget estimates indicated this expenditure to go down to **** billion rupees for the financial year 2020. Overall, the government has been cutting allocation of funds to this scheme over the last five years.

The National Health Protection Scheme (NHPS) was formerly called Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY) under the Ministry of Labour and Employment. It was later shifted to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and renamed Rashtriya Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (RSSY) in fiscal year 2017.
