In 2024, the retail market share of pastries, cookies, and cereals in Spain was mostly led by supermarkets, accounting for close to 75 percent of sales. Hypermarkets ranked second with around 15 percent of the total retail sales. Spain is known for its gastronomical culture. Indeed, it includes a broad variety of pastries, which are very well-loved in Spanish households.

A love for chocolate

Following the global trend, much of the chocolate industry in Spain is controlled by world-famous companies, including Alvean, Ferrero, and Mondelez, among others. Spanish consumers enjoy their chocolate snacks, and their consumption has been increasing throughout the years, even though governments and health organizations have been increasingly discussing the health concerns linked to consuming large quantities of sugar. In fact, as of late, the consumption has begun decreasing.

Confectionery in France

Aside from Spain, France and its people are also known for their confectionery industry. In 2024, the nation generated approximately 22 billion U.S. dollars of revenue in the confectionery segment.

Chocolate is one of the preferred sweet snacks in the country, playing a significant role in the French confectionery industry; in 2023, on average, close to 12.5 kilograms of chocolate were consumed per person.
