Batteries are mobile power sources that are used in a plethora of electrical gadgets. From medical devices, such as hearing aids, to consumer electronics, such as smartphones, to industrial applications such as cordless power tools, society as we know it would be unthinkable without the existence of batteries. Japan is one of the important global players in the battery industry and has been at the forefront of innovation in the field for decades. In 2023, the total production value of batteries in Japan amounted to **** trillion Japanese yen, increasing compared to the previous year and showing a strong development during the past decade. More than **** of this year’s value consisted of built-in lithium-ion batteries for vehicles, showcasing the importance of automobile batteries in recent times.
Primary batteries
The battery industry distinguishes between primary and secondary battery types. Primary batteries are single-use products that commonly feature in household appliances that see infrequent usage or that do not require large amounts of power, such as remote controls. This was the type of battery with the highest production volume, until the breakthrough of lithium-ion batteries for cars. The most commonly produced type in Japan is the * battery, followed by the ** battery, and the ** battery. Production of primary batteries is relatively inexpensive, but requires proper disposal to circumvent them being an environmental hazard.
Secondary batteries
Secondary batteries are multiple-use rechargeable batteries which are commonly employed in electrical gadgets that require a constant flow of energy at a relatively high intensity, such as in the case of electrical cars. Notable Japanese industry players, such as Panasonic and GS Yuasa are globally prominent in the manufacturing of rechargeable lithium-ion batteries for automobiles. While primary batteries are more numerous, secondary batteries manufactured in Japan comprise the overwhelming value of industry production. Compared to single-use batteries, rechargeable batteries are pricier to produce but promise longevity of use and are environmentally friendlier.Â
