In the Netherlands, every resident or employee is obliged to take a basic health insurance to cover medical costs from, for example, visits to a general practitioner or the hospital. The Dutch government decides on the cover provided by this package and health insurance companies are obliged to accept everyone who meets the requirements, regardless of age or state of health. The numbers provided here concern pharmaceutical care as provided by public pharmacists.

Pharmaceutical revenue within basic health insurance in the Netherlands 2008-2023
Between 2013 and 2023, the revenue of pharmaceutical care increased annually. In 2023, the total revenue of pharmaceutical care within the basic health insurance amounted to approximately 5.4 billion euros. This was an increase of around 300 million euros compared to the previous year.
