India's financial year begins in April and ends in March. For example, FY 2019 started in April 2018 and ended in March 2019.
Major ports are under the union list while the non-major ports are under the concurrent list of the constitution of India. Therefore, major ports are under the administrative control of government of India while the non-major ports are governed by the respective maritime state governments.

At the end of fiscal year 2023, Maharashtra's sea cargo traffic across major ports amounted to 147 million metric tons. The state of Goa handled the lowest cargo traffic in its major port during the same period. About 70 percent of trade by value and around 95 percent by volume across the country was done through maritime transport.
