The Indian automotive industry was the * largest in the world in 2019. It was also the ** largest manufacturer of commercial vehicles a year prior. In the eastern city of Kolkata in West Bengal alone, there were 1024 thousand registered vehicles in 2020. A major proportion of the registered vehicles were two wheelers.
Indian automotive market
In financial year 2020, more than *** thousand commercial vehicles were produced across the south Asian country, and more than *** thousand passenger cars exported during the same time period. However, the two-wheeler production has outgrown all other segments over the recent years. In 2019, two-wheelers dominated the production volume within the industry, with almost ** million units. The sector has also contributed to employment in the nation, with over a million people employed directly since 2015.
Slowdown in the industry
The industry had the steepest fall in almost two decades, when car sales dropped by about ** percent. The demand for luxury cars however, improved for a brief period. Over *** cars were delivered by Mercedes Benz India prior to Deepavali across the nation. The company reported a hike in sales close to different festivals. With the new emission standards to be released in April 2020, the major original equipment manufacturers and industry players will need to find the right mix to fuel their success in the Indian automotive segment.
