The use of credit cards in Sweden did not change during the period from 2012 to 2014, according bi-yearly surveys, but increased significantly in 2020 when the share reached ** percent. Credit card usage increased from ** percent in 2010 to ** percent in 2012, and to ** percent in 2014. The user share of credit cards then stayed at ** percent until 2018. the total value of credit card payments reached *** billion Swedish kronor in 2020.

Debit card payments

      What seemed to be a rather more common payment method in Sweden during that period were payments via debit card, which stayed at a usage share of ** percent since 2014, but declined slightly down to ** percent in 2020. Since 2009, the number of payments made with debit cards increased annually. In 2009, around *** billion debit card payments were made, and in 2019 the number had increased to nearly *** billion.

Mobile payment: Swish

   The Swedish mobile payment service Swish was launched in 2012 and has become more and more popular. As of July 2020, the payment app had over *** million customers, most of them private accounts. The average value per Swish transaction during that period was *** Swedish kronor.
