Pharmaceutical sales in Sweden increased since 2000 when the sales value amounted to around 21 billion Swedish kronor, and reached the highest value in 2023 when pharmaceuticals were sold worth nearly 64 billion Swedish kronor.

Highest sales of subsidized pharmaceuticals

   The sales of pharmaceuticals in Sweden is divided into four prescription groups: subsidized prescription, unsubsidized pharmaceuticals, non-prescribed pharmaceuticals and pharmaceuticals for inpatient care. The largest part of the pharmaceutical sales in Sweden consists of sales of subsidized prescription pharmaceuticals.

The costs of subsidized pharmaceuticals

   Subsidized pharmaceuticals in Sweden are partly paid by the patient, and when the patient has reached a set amount (maximum 2,350 Swedish kronor during 2020), the state subvention will cover the rest of the costs. The self-paid amount varies and set at a different maximum amount each year. In 2023, per capita expenditure on subsidized pharmaceuticals was nearly 3,100 Swedish kronor.
