People at risk of poverty or social exclusion (AROPE) are individuals who are at risk of poverty (AROP) and/or suffering from severe material deprivation (SMD) and/or living in households with zero or very low work intensity (LWI).

The largest percentage of people in Italy at risk of poverty or social exclusion live in the South. In Campania, about half of the population was at risk of poverty or social exclusion in 2021, the highest share nationwide. Calabria followed with around *** percentage point less than Campania, while Molise ranked third with **** percent of the population.
