In 2022, the highest abortion rate (voluntary interruption of pregnancy) in Italy was recorded among women aged 30 to 34 years old. Karman method was the second most common kind of intervention in cases of induced abortion. Most of the abortions were performed in public healthcare facilities, whereas less than * percent of them took place in private hospitals.

In Italy, abortion is regulated by Law *** entered into force in 1978. This law is often defined as one of the most liberal laws about abortion in Europe. It allows pregnant women aged 18 years and older to resort to a private or public institution, asking to have an abortion performed within the first * days of pregnancy.

Conversely, not all Italian healthcare facilities with a department of obstetrics and gynecology perform abortions. In Campania, for instance, there were ** structures with an obstetrics and gynecology department in 2020 and it was possible to seek an abortion in only ** of them.
