What is licensed merchandise?

The global licensed merchandise industry encompasses toys and games, stationery and paper products, sporting goods, housewares, infant products, home furnishings, apparel, video games and software and publishing activities which utilize images, names or logos which are trademarked or owned by another party. In 2017, global retail sales of licensed merchandise amounted to around 171.5 billion U.S. dollars. Peppa Pig is one such example of an entertainment character whose name and image is used on various consumer products. Peppa Pig Bag-o-Fun was the leading children's magazine in the United Kingdom, with a circulation of almost 81 thousand copies between July and December 2018.

Peppa Pig is a British preschool animated television series, created by Neville Astley and Mark Baker, which first aired on 31 May, 2004. The show revolves around an anthropomorphic female pig, her family, and her friends. In subsequent years, the series has spawned several video games, books, clothing, jewelry, and a family theme park known as Peppa Pig World. In February 2015, a 15-minute film called Peppa Pig: The Golden Boots was released. In the United States, the show can be watched on the Nickelodeon channel, Nick Jr. Peppa Pig has gained popularity in China; a film, titled Peppa Pig Celebrates Chinese New Year, was specially released in the country and made 14 million U.S. dollars in its first three days at the box office.
