Between 2015 and 2021, the state of Pernambuco had the highest number of confirmed cases of congenital Zika virus syndrome (CZS) in Brazil, with a total of *** children affected. It was followed by Bahia, with *** confirmed cases. Brazil saw a sharp rise in cases of microcephaly and other related conditions among newborns in 2015 along with the spread of the Zika virus in the region. While adults usually present none or mild symptoms when acquiring the virus, Zika can affect newborn development when a women is infected during pregnancy.
