In Italy, the total number of newly diagnosed HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) infections peaked in 2012, when new cases were recorded. Thereafter, the number gradually decreased until 2020, when individuals were newly diagnosed with HIV, to rise again in 2021, 2022, and 2023. This virus is responsible for AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome), which is a condition that remarkably weakens the immune system, making the contraction of diseases much more likely. 

HIV incidence worldwide

In 2023, roughly **** million people suffered from HIV worldwide. The number of people living with HIV steadily grew from 2000 to 2023. Nonetheless, the  number of new HIV infections decreased over time.  

HIV epidemiology in Italy

In Italy, the regions of Lombardy, Lazio, and Emilia-Romagna were the ones with the highest number of people newly diagnosed with HIV in 2023. The virus was mainly prevalent among males aged 30 to 49 years old during this same period. Indeed, *** men aged between 30 and 39 years, and *** between 40 and 49 years old, were newly diagnosed with HIV.
