Citation formats

Most Germans preferred to go on a in 2021. Family holidays were also popular, though some didn’t travel for a vacation at all. All the same, vacation travel, whether abroad or in Germany, is generally something Germans look forward to. The planning phase is just as much a part of the process as the trip itself.

Going on vacation

Based on recent surveys on vacation and travel interest in Germany, most respondents were or *** in combining holiday time with going somewhere. German holidaymakers used various means of transport for their planned vacation trips in 2019, among them primarily passenger cars and flying. While Germans enjoy planning longer vacations, short vacation trips were also popular.

Accommodation and spending

When traveling domestically, German tourists mostly stayed in hotels/ guesthouses, or holiday homes. The same was true for accommodation choices when going abroad. In terms of vacation travel spending per person, German tourists spent *** in Asia and the Far East in 2018, followed by USA and Canada.
