In 2021, for the first time in history, a higher share of the doctoral (PhD) students in Sweden were women. That year, 51 percent of the registered PhD students at Swedish universities were women, a figure that continued to increase in 2022. Up until 2020, when the share was evenly divided, there were slightly more male than female PhD students.
