Coffee is a beverage prepared by brewing ground, roasted coffee beans with water. Coffee may be slowly brewed or brewed quickly, under pressure. Slow brew coffee varieties can be drip or filter coffee, French press or percolator coffee, while quick brews are termed espresso. While espresso is typically considered a single shot of highly concentrated coffee, it may also be served with milk. Such blends include cappuccino, flat white, latte, macchiato, and more.

In Canada, traditional hot brewed coffee accounted for 76 percent of out-of-home coffee servings, while single-serve coffee held a 31.1 percent share in the hot beverage market. Though the sales of coffee pods have increased since 2005, there are still numerous consumers who are not interested in owning a single-serve coffee maker. In 2014, a survey found that 48 percent of these consumers said coffee pods were too expensive, while 37 percent said they created too much waste.

While in-home may still be the most popular location for coffee consumption, 77 percent of consumers said they visited coffee cafes at least monthly. Of these, 58 percent said they preferred to visit for the beverages more than other menu items.
