For the second year running, Electronic Arts (EA) Sports released the bestselling game of the year. The football simulation game, FIFA 19 for the PlayStation 4 (PS4) sold almost *** million units across Europe during 2018. The only other game to sell a similar number of units was the western-themed action-adventure game, Red Dead Redemption 2, which was also released for the PS4. Eight of the top fifteen selling games were released onto the PS4 during 2018.

During 2018, there were almost ten million consoles sold between the top brands. The leading gaming console in terms of unit sales, the PS4, sold almost *** million consoles in 2018. The Playstation brand was created by Sony in 1994 and consists of the Playstation, Playstation 2, 3 and 4. The Japanese brand has consistently held a majority market share for gaming consoles in the UK.

Children & gaming

A lot of parents worry whether their children are spending too much time playing gaming consoles. An Ofcom report that investigated media usage of children within the United Kingdom (UK) found that as of 2017, the average 8- to 11-year-old spent approximately ten hours per week gaming. In fact, the average time spent for that age group had seen an annual increase from 2013 onwards. Children aged 12 to 15 years-old spent even more time gaming.
