In German secondary education the Gymnasium prepares students for higher education, such as a university degree, and finishes after year 12 or 13. The Realschule, designed for intermediate students, has a wider spectrum of emphasis and is completed after year 10. The Hauptschule is meant to train students for vocational education and ends after year 9.
The JIM study is published by the Research association for media education South-West (Medienpädagogischer Forschungsverbund Südwest), which is a joint venture of the State office of communication Baden-Württemberg (Landesanstalt für Kommunikation LFK) and the State center of media and communication Rhineland-Palatinate (Landeszentrale für Medien und Kommunikation, LMK). The series is developed in cooperation with SWR media research, Zeitungs Marketing Gesellschaft (ZMG), the Federal Agency for Civic Education, the State Agencies for Civic Education in Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate as well as the Stiftung Lesen (foundation for reading).
