Figures were calculated by ÌÇÐÄÆƽâ°æ by adding up annual values for the 27 member states of the EU as of 2024, excluding Cyprus and Malta. The UK is thus not included in the time series, even for the years when it was an EU member. Similarly, the member states that have joined the EU later are included in the pre-accession years.

*From 2011 on, Belgium is not included in the total.
**From 2017 on, Denmark is not included in the total.
†From 2018 on, Greece is not included in the total.
‡From 2020 on, Luxembourg and Romania are not included in the total.
§From 2021 on, Spain is not included in the total.

This statistic shows the total amount of freight transported annually in the EU-27 countries by all inland modes of transport between 2000 and 2021, including freight trains, road transportation and inland shipping. A significant decrease in freight transportation occurred in 2009, in the wake of the global economic crisis. From 2010 onwards the transport volume of the European Union was increasing, before seemingly dropping again in 2020, which was the result of the fact that annual data for several countries, such as Spain and Greece, was not available anymore.
