The meningitis death rate in Canada has remained relatively stable since 2000, with a couple minor changes. As of 2023, there were 0.2 deaths from meningitis in Canada per 100,000 population. Meningitis occurs when there is an inflammation of the meninges, the membrane that surrounds the brain and spinal cord.Â
Vaccination
There are two types of meningitis, bacterial and viral. However, other forms of meningitis can occur from fungal infections, cancers, and allergic reactions. There is a vaccination against bacterial meningitis that is available in most countries, but vaccination coverage varies. In the U.S. over 88 percent of adolescents have received a vaccination. Trends indicate that elsewhere in the world meningitis vaccination is improving.
Meningitis in the United States
In 2020, there were a total of just 235 meningitis cases in the United States, with the highest number found among those aged 45 to 64 years. Among these cases there were 23 deaths in total, 9 of which occurred among those aged 45 years and older.
