Respondents are asked directly about their experience of crime, irrespective of whether or not they reported these incidents to the police. As such the CSEW provides a record of peoples’ experiences of crime which is unaffected by variations in reporting behaviour of victims or variations in police practices of recording crime.
Survey results are extrapolated to represent the whole of England and Wales using official population figures.
