The years 2021 and especially 2022 were extremely profitable for container ship operators worldwide. In 2022, Maersk reported an EBIT margin of some **** percent, up from ** percent in 2021 and **** percent in 2020. It is estimated that the container shipping industry made a profit of about *** billion U.S. dollars in 2021, which is more than double what the industry made for the whole period from 2010 to 2020.
