In 2023, India was the second largest producer of cement in the world. Consumption of cement at that time stood at around 375.2 million metric tons.
Cement demand in India
The market has been dominated by the private sector, having about 98 percent of the total production capacity. Rural and urban housing were the major consumers of cement in 2021, accounting for nearly 60 percent of the domestic demand.Â
Infrastructure in India
One of the key drivers for the Indian economy was infrastructure. In 2023, this sector had an FDI equity inflow of around 1.7 billion U.S. dollars. In financial year 2021, over a trillion Indian rupees of infrastructure investments went into the real estate sector across India.
