* SAE: Society of Automative Engineers. They classify autonomous driving into 6 levels (0-5), which define who has control and responsibility of the vehicle, the human or the automated system.

Level 0 (No automation): The human controls everything (steering, braking, accelerating).

Level 1 (Assisted Driving): The system permanently takes over either longitudinal or lateral control (e.g., cruise control or lane keeping assist). The driver remains in control.

Level 2 (partially automated driving): The system takes over longitudinal and lateral control (e.g., traffic jam assist). The driver must constantly monitor the system and be able to intervene at any time.

Level 3 (Highly Automated Driving): The vehicle takes over the entire driving task in certain situations. Humans do not need to constantly monitor the vehicle, but must take over the steering when prompted.

Level 4 (Fully Automated Driving): The car takes over driving completely in defined areas. Occupants no longer need to intervene.

Level 5 (Driverless Driving): The vehicle drives completely autonomously in every situation. No human drivers are required.
